Image
By: Lily Haasl (Wild Space Dance Company)  A Day in the Life At Wild Space summer camp Lily Haasl 07/15/2021 The fly’s perspective: In this picture the kids are working on an art project and interacting with the teacher. This is the scene I would come to after flyering and the situation I would help clean up. It was during this time I got to converse with the kids and help them finish any of their projects. Typical Day Within the first week of my internship a typical day would consist of flyering in order to acquire more kids for the summer camp. At first, Asia, the other intern, and I would walk around and ask businesses if we would be able to put a flyer up for the summer camp. By the next day, we were driving around to different schools and neighborhoods to hang up flyers, with the owners permission. By the end of our day we would talk with our supervisor about the accomplishments we made and then would help the teachers clean up. Afterwards we would confer with our supervisor agai

By: Alanys Morales (Bembe Drum & Dance)   Career Interview: Bony Plog-Benavides   by: Alanys Morales  This following is an interview with Bony Plog-Benavides, a musical director and percussionist in Milwaukee. What is your job description & what led you to do this job? Bony: I have a few jobs, I am a traveling music teacher for mps so I teach percussion lessons at many different public schools like high school, middle school, and 3 elementary schools. I teach kids how to read music sheets and it's more oriented towards the band so they play more bells, xylophone, ect. So technically I'm teaching students how to function in a band. Now I also teach for bembe , where this organisation is more of spreading culture like afro-latino culture & its haritiage. I am the percussion teacher. I teach students work with them on Brazil, Columbia, Cuba, Puerto Rico, ect. The ages I teach are around the ages from 6 - to adults. I teach at a university. I give them private lessons

(2021) A Day in the Life of Ferny Lira

Image
By: Ferny Lira (Casa Romero)  This week I went to an art and activism retreat where we planned a mural and painted it. On Monday we got to know each other. We played picturonary, making quick sketches of what some of the words meant to us. Some of these words related to real world issues like segregation and some were more about community like unity. On Tuesday we went on a mural tour and looked at some of the murals around Milwaukee. We tried to identify what message the murals sent depending on the symbols we saw. (I’m the one in the pink hair) On Wednesday we planned out the mural. We thought of what we saw in the murals around Milwaukee and tried to see if we wanted to use those examples in our mural. We had our mural idea sketched out and we started the outline. On Thursday we began painting. I started to paint the dirt with the other art intern Sammy. So far we finished the base colors. On Friday we started detailing and I helped make the pebbles in the dirt. It was lots of fu

(2021) A Day in the Life of Asia Steele

By: Asia Steele (Wild Space Dance Company) Hello! My name is Asia Steele and I had the honor of receiving a job at Wild Arts Summer Camp as an intern this July, which I couldn't be more grateful for. I basically have to help out the teachers when it comes to things ranging from engaging the middle schoolers in activities or even just going around the city of Milwaukee putting up flyers for advertising. However after accepting this position, my schedule Mondays through Thursdays have certainly changed up. In this post, I'll take you through a typical day in my life as a Wild Arts employee so you can see what my life is like working here. Hope you enjoy the read! 6:00am: While I don't necessarily need to wake up this early, I enjoy having some time to myself before the day begins so I'm usually just laying in bed, watching YouTube videos or listening to music until I know that it's time to pick out my outfit for the day. On this particular day, we're taking a fie

(2021) A Day in the Life of Mariana Smith-Rivera

Image
By: Mariana Smith-Rivera (Woodland Pattern Book Center) A day as an intern for me is to visit the Woodland Pattern Book Center in the morning before arriving at Hopkins Lloyd on Thursdays. I arrive at Woodland Pattern around 30 minutes before leaving for Hopkins. My supervisor and I are usually the ones alone at Woodland Pattern. We drink our coffee and catch up in the morning on how our sleep was. My supervisor Alexa usually takes me to Lloyd and the drive there is simple.  Today was a delight to see the kids again for CLC. We begin with a little warm up which would be considered our introduction for the day. We told them a story about a man with no arms struggling to find his dog, then soon enough he found his dog. And we drew a dog picture while telling the story to correlate and give visuals. Then soon after we played a game. We continue to work on their dyed T-shirts that they started on Tuesday. Alexa and I had gone and got the supplies on Monday for them. When everything is fin

(2021) A Day in the Life of Samuel Hernandez

Image
By: Samuel Hernandez (Casa Romero)  Hi, I’m Samuel Hernandez and I am a summer intern at Casa Romero Renewal  Center. A little about what I do at Casa Romero is help with its art and music camps. I’m a little bit like a counselor and a mentor to the children who participate in said camps. So far working at Casa Romero has been so uplifting. Being able to work with children and this past week, working on a mural that’s from my community for my community was so fulfilling. While everyday at Casa Romero is different, working there is so fun. A couple of weeks ago, I was able to help with a mural that is going to be displayed  outside of Casa Romero. The following is a summary of the last day working on the mural. 9:00am-11:30am I woke up around 9 am and did all the essentials before leaving. I brushed my teeth, took a shower, made my bed, got dressed and waited for my older brother to take me to Casa Romero. While I waited, I also ate a light breakfast. Once my brother arrived we left and

(2021) A Day in the Life of Jaraya Smith

Image
By: Jaraya Smith (Walnut Way Conservation Corps) June 22nd, 2021 Today w e picked weeds on the Southside of the street. We also learned how to water the plants and how to tell the difference between the windrows(the beds). You can tell the difference because the beds are higher up then the place we walk on. I think the dirtiest or unlikable part of the whole process would be watering. Because we have to use 4 hoses starting at the fire hydrant where we get the water from. But the thing that makes the whole process so messy and dirty would be dragging the water hoses through the wet mud. We also learned how to read the packaging on the seed package. How you do that would be looking at the back of the package. Where it shows and tells you how much you dig the hole for the seeds and how far apart to plant them. It also tells you the expiration date. Or the date they were packaged so we know how many seeds to plant together to give them a better advantage of one of them coming up and growi

(2021) Average Saturday as a Bembe Intern

Image
By: Ne’Rhia Watson (Bembe Drum & Dance)  Average Saturday as a Bembe Intern Ne’Rhia Watson I truly love and appreciate my role as an intern at Bembe. The students and staff are all so open and welcoming. Plus, it seems like a new adventure in Afro-Latin culture every day. I help teach and participate in drumming and dance classes throughout the week. As a teaching assistant, I know I'm not supposed to favor a class, but I love to participate in the youth dance classes on Saturday. Don't get me wrong, I love all the classes that I participate in, but this has some of the best components for a great time.  My day starts with me waking up at around 8 in the morning. I usually eat a small breakfast, shhower and get ready for my day at work. On Saturdays, I have to go in at 11:15 for the youth dance class. It’s one of my favorite classes because of the space it’s held in a beautiful garden space. I make my way over to Casa Romero Center where the classes are held. When I arrive,

(2021) Career Interview: Daniela Cortes

Image
By: Samuel Hernandez (Casa Romero)  The following is an interview with Daniela Cortes, a local freelance editor based in Milwaukee. Can you tell me a bit about your career path and what led you to the role you are in today? Daniela Cortes : When I was in high school, I liked editing videos but I always just did it for class projects or for fun and I didn’t really know there was a possibility of doing it as a career, so I didn’t end up studying it right away when I went to college. I ended up going to Carroll University in Waukesha for animal behavior, and in my freshman year there, I ended up taking a random class that had a lot to do with Film, and I realized that I was really good at it and I liked doing it so I ended up transferring to Columbia College in Chicago to pursue a Film career and I graduated there in 2016. During my final year at Columbia, I did get the opportunity to do an internship with 371 Productions that works here in Milwaukee. They’re a documentary production com

(2021) A Day in the Life of Noah Spottek

Image
By: Noah Spottek (Artists Working in Education)  My name is Noah, and I’m an intern with Artists Working in Education (AWE). I’m going to be a sophomore at Golda Meir High School, and I really love music, manga, drawing, and my dog Panda.  I’m so excited to be working as an intern with AWE this summer because I think that making art in the community is so important. It’s not every day that you get to meet artists who are doing what they love and are creating artwork to stay in your neighborhood – like a gift! Often, artwork can be given to communities and it can make them feel special, but they aren’t connected to the process of making it. They can feel like it is something that they can’t do on their own. The really cool part of working with AWE is that kids get to help make the artwork, so they feel more connected to it.  For our first project, we are creating a bench for a community gathering space at Common Bond. Our days can be really interesting, fun, and empowering experiences.

(2021) Career Interview: Cecilia Palacios

Image
By: Ferny Lira (Casa Romero) Interview with Cecilia Palacios I was lucky to interview an artist named Cecilia. Throughout the interview I learned a few new things that I needed to know in order to pursue something in art. Cecilia is an illustrator for Kohls. Meaning, they mainly draw furniture. Cecilia also makes illustrations for her instagram to show her art in case anyone is interested. Cecilia went to MIAD and originally dreamed of becoming a comic book artist. When they got into college they found their career through connections. Cecilia always loved making art and knew they wanted to become an artist. Cecilia says that one of their biggest struggles is staying consistent on their instagram whilst taking breaks from time to time to focus on themselves. Some skills Cecilia believes are important for someone interested in pursuing art are dedication and passion. They believe that the only way anyone can truly become an artist is if they work hard for something they love doing. Ceci
