By: Bazil Pérez (UWM Peck School of the Arts) Interviewer: Bazil Pérez Artist: Gabriela Riveros  Date: 07/23/20 Gabriela Riveros is a Milwaukee based who is 26, a huge Latinx activist, and a well known artist. She mainly works with digital mediums and inking. She grew up loving to draw, and went to art based schools throughout her education, later going on to major in illustration. Growing up her role models often were her teachers and one specific activist named Janet Arellano, meeting through internships. She recalls drawing since she was 2 or 3, the first instance being on walls with spider drawings. However she considered it professionally when she was 18 years old. Originally though she started with pencils and pens, but when she went to college she did many mediums. This got her interested in collages, painting with acrylic, some photoshop, but being an illustration major she then became focused on digital art with slight traditional art. When she realized she liked digital, she

(2020) Hello, I’m Erick Watts!

Image
By: Erick Watts (Walker's Point Center for the Arts) Before I get into the details of my internship let me explain who I am. I was born and raised in MIlwaukee, Wisconsin and I am currently a student at Rufus King High School and I will be going into my senior year this fall. My passion is art and entertainment which is why I am a digital artist who has dabbled in photo and video editing. Although even with experience of the art I create in my free time, my internship I have done with the WPCA is my first technical job. Getting this internship made me nervous but also gave me a new feeling of confidence in my skills. While no day here is exactly like another, the day is mainly based around attempting to accomplish your goals and just making sure you have some kind of work done. Although this can be a challenge considering how I only work for four hours a day, it is usually about completing goals over a week not just one day. 11:00 AM- 12:00 PM: The internship doesn't start unti

(2020) Career Interview: Nate

Image
By: Stephanie Alvarez (TRUE Skool) 1. can you tell me a bit about your career path and what led you to the role you are in today? -My career path is currently being a graphic designer but it tends to shift relatively often. I own and manage a clothing brand called Clementine Studios but also do IT for a shoe company helping people who have difficulties walking.   2. what were some of your early roles in the field? -I first was exposed to screen printing and designing clothes when I was 17 and worked at a restaurant that was located in a building that held a screen printing business downtown. From that I gained the basic knowledge of how to print a shirt from start to finish and learned the remedial information needed to make and maintain a brand.     3. what attracted you to this career path? -I’ve always been into fashion but when I was a freshman in high school I was exposed to all ways of streetwear, prep wear, athletic wear and so on. From that I followed and kept up with most tren

Being an artist also requires finding creative ways to make money off art and also enjoy doing the art at the same time.     How has using Twitter as the primary medium to operate affect how you make revenue? (2020) A day in the life of a Lynden Sculpture gardens art intern.

By: Skylar Smith (Lynden Sculpture Garden) A day in the life of a Lynden Sculpture gardens art intern.  On a typical day when we are having a camp/workshop, I arrive at Lynden around 12 which is an hour before the kids start to show up in order to help set up. Depending on the camp the setup is different but it also varies day to day. Today I woke up, got ready and headed to Lynden around 11:30 am. Once I get to Lynden I put on my mask and hand sanitizer and headed inside. Once I get up to the studio I ask Jeremy what I can do to help and he typically gives me materials to prepare for the kids. Then we go outside and head over to the tents. Once we are at the tents we set up the tables and stools and clean everything. After that we set up a basket with all the materials the kids will need for the project we are doing that day and set a basket at each seat. Once we are done setting up Jeremy goes over to the check in table and checks in the kids. Jeremy then sends the kids over to me at

As a child, coloring a drawing was just a way to pass time on punishment, but as his parents acknowledged his talent, he began to pursue the career path of an artist and arts educator. Bernard took classes in commercial art illustration at MATC in Madison, Wisconsin, eventually transferring to MIAD (Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design)to receive his Bachelor’s in Fine Arts in 1993. In 2000, Bernard went to grad school at the University of Mississippi Oxford, achieving a Master’s in Fine Arts in 2003. Between 1993 and 2000, he helped to co-fo

(2020) A Day in the Life of... Fatima Jimenez

Image
By: Fatima Jimenez (Casa Romero)  This summer I am working with Casa Romero Renewal Center in the Southside of Milwaukee, as the Arts Intern for all the camps. Before I begin describing my day as an intern, I wanted to introduce myself! My name is Fatima Jimenez and I have been involved with Casa Romero during all my years in high school and hope to continue doing so during my college experience. I will be an incoming freshman at Marquette University where I am enrolled as a secondary education, spanish, and history major. I strive to continue working with kids in my professional career. Since everything has been virtual for us this summer we had to switch things up quite a bit, making our typical days look unexpectedly weird. On a regular day of my internship I wake up and eat breakfast. Then I struggle to get my sister out of bed as she is one of the students in our programs. We both try to look as decent as possible for our Zoom calls and head over to our workspace or somewhere quie

By: Mahala Taterczynisk (TRUE Skool) Hello, my name is Mahala S. Taterczynski, I am a TrueSkool intern for the summer program. The first two week of the program have been super fun and inspiring already. So far we have been to the beach, cleaned up communities and packed backs for our fellow students. At TrueSkool we have three different kinds of days, mondays and tuesdays are online days. Wednesdays are in person at TrueSkool and Thursdays are also in person but we meet at different locations usually in the community to get out more, still being safe! Mondays and Tuesdays are our online days, this looks like our team connecting online through zoom and other sites to talk about our projects and to catch up. Last monday we had a class about e-commerce and also how websites can steal your information. It was super easy to do, I was even able to make some breakfast while in the meeting! Here's a picture of me and a few other students on zoom for our internship orientation. Wednesday
