(2020) A Day In The Life Of An Arts Intern

By: Nebiyah Jordan (TRUE Skool)

Greetings, my name is Nebiyah Jordan

Before I dive deeper into my personal life as an arts intern, I first want to vaguely introduce myself. First and foremost, I was born and raised in Milwaukee, Wisconsin all of my life. Recently, I graduated from highschool in May at a later date than what was originally planned. It was a rather interesting graduation due to covid pushing the ceremony into an outside event, but I digress. I will continue my higher education in this city for 2 more years at the Milwaukee Area Technical College before I transfer to Columbia College Chicago. With that out of the way we can finally journey into my life as an arts intern. I started my internship at an organization called True Skool who has also partnered with Milwaukee Public Schools for their Arts Internship program. I have only been with this program for 2 weeks but the experience is still plentiful.

5:00am- The alarm in my phone is set to go off at 9am every Monday through Thursday, but I always wake up at 5am in the morning instead. However, I keep the alarm at 9am because it serves as my “ mentally prepare yourself to start working for 5 hours” reminder. Despite the time my alarm is set for I will state what I do when I actually wake up. Everyday I wake up at 5 o’clock in the morning and take care of my basic hygiene such as brushing my teeth, washing my face, and taking a shower. After this is done, I eat breakfast, usually a bowl of cereal.

7:00am- These tasks only take me about an hour and a half to complete so I am usually left with nothing productive to do until I start work. In this free time I usually spend those moments functioning like a typical 18 year old. The two things that I occupy my time with are laying on my bed and scrolling through my phone and/or playing video games until it turns 10 o’clock/.

11:00am- Now when the 10am mark hits, my day can go two ways. If the day is a Monday or a Tuesday, then we work from home. On the other hand, if the day is a Wednesday or Thursday, I work inside the True Skool building on Wednesday and then at a random public space on Thursday. Monday’s and Tuesday’s consists of live chats on an app called zoom with my employers and other interns.

11:00am- On Wednesdays and Thursday at 10am I start to pack my work bag which consists of a water bottle, my phone charger, an umbrella, chapstick, and my keys and head for my destination. Today on July 9th, we visited a garden on Brown street where we built and painted little libraries, while others performed a community cleanup.

2:30pm- Usually around this time we have our break that lasts about 20-30 minutes. I mostly just eat some food and get something to drink. This wednesday I ate subway and drank hot chocolate for my break.

3:00pm- Around 3 o’clock pm we resume working again. As I work throughout the day my main challenge is conditioning myself to pay attention. Usually, for the first couple of days the interns have been on live chats that were around 2 hours long and it usually gets very monotonous. However, I have actually gotten everything I needed to complete done on time. For instance, the interns were assigned homework based around ecommerce that I finished on time.

Being an arts intern so far is an eye opener to how different working online is. This is something that I know won’t be easy for me right away because I am the type of person who does better when someone is sitting right next to me because I am a visual learner. Despite the challenges, I am excited and anxious to know what is to come next in this journey of responsibility and discipline.
